Make Pizza from Scratch – It’s Healthier, Cheaper and Fun!

I hosted a very fun “Make Pizza from Scratch” night about 2 weeks ago. Everyone ate as much as they wanted and was very happy! Here are the recipes I used to make the basic pizza (crust and sauce). From that point it’s up to you to customize your pizza to your satisfaction, a few days ago I posted a great Black Bean Pizza, and tomorrow I will post a cold, veggie pizza with a cream cheese based sauce, the possibilities are endless!

Pizza Crust

Makes 1 large crust

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 (0.25 ounce) — packet Active Dry Yeast
  • 1 — Cup warm water
  • 2.5 to 3 — Cups organic all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 — teaspoon salt
  • 2 — Tablespoons olive oil or canola oil

DIRECTIONS

Soften yeast in warm water, in a mixing bowl. Add 2-2.25 cups flour, salt and oil. Stir in enough of the remaining flour to make a soft dough. Knead on a lightly floured surface until smooth, about 4 to 6 minutes.
Place dough in greased bowl; Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 30-45 minutes. Punch dough down. Pat dough into greased large pizza pan. Top with desired toppings. bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20-30 minutes or until done (depending on toppings).

Easy (Really Good) Pizza Sauce

Serves 8

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • salt to taste
  • ground black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 tablespoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed

DIRECTIONS

  1. Mix together the tomato paste, water, and olive oil. Mix well. Add garlic, salt and pepper to taste, oregano, basil, and rosemary. Mix well and let stand several hours to let flavors blend. No cooking necessary, just spread on dough.
